Job Summary Staff Nurse is a first-level professional Nurse who provides direct patient care to one patient or a group of patients assigned to her/him during duty shift. Assists in Ward management and supervision. She/he is directly responsible to the Ward supervisor.
Staff Nurse Job Description
- Direct Patient Care
- Admits and discharges the patient as per consultant order.
- Take charge of the patient and the patient’s records.
- On admission receive the patient, orient them about area an facility and make him / her comfortable.
- See that the beds are made.
- Change 2 hourly positions after attending pressure points of bedridden patient. Use air bed and water bed if patients require.
- Give sponge bath to patients –major post-operative cases, bed patients etc.
- Assist in major dressings of the patient.
- Insert peripheral venous catheters as and when required. Mention date and time of insertion and arrow indicating the direction of the vein flow
- Check the patient’s case file and give medication –

- Enter record in the Medicine Administration Record sheet immediately after administering the drug & observe for any reaction.
- Check blood when received for—MT’s signature and seal in the form.
- Inform supervisor and duty doctor to check the blood and enter in the respective progress notes.
- Check and send the correct specimen to the lab following the hospital policy.
- For any investigation or any procedure, the patient should be prepared as per the consultant’s order, and shifted as per hospital policy, reports to be obtained in time and inform the concerned consultant. While shifting the N/A to accompany the patient, all serious patients to be accompanied by a duty doctor.
- Complete the nurse’s documents immediately after each procedure.
- See sick and post-op patients frequently, check vital signs and record frequently.
- In case of very ill critical patients, monitor patient per hourly and any fall or rise in vital signs inform duty doctor/consultant immediately and take written instruction and carry it out immediately.
- Telephonic orders must be confirmed by another s/n or duty doctor and documented in the progress notes. On the very next consultant’s visit get the order documented in the doctor’s progress notes.
- Put your signature and name wherever it is applicable.
- Observe IV Line frequently so that there is no extravasation/infiltration.
- Check the pre-op patient for local preparation, investigation reports,, consent anesthesiologist’s pre-op check and pre-medication orders and complete it.
- Maintains personal hygiene and comforts of the patient.
- Attends to the nutritional needs of the patient, prepares invalid’s diet and feeds helpless patients.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment for the patients.
- Implements and maintains ward policies and routines.
- Coordinates patient care with various health team members.
- Follows doctors’ rounds.
- Performs technical task, e.g., administration of medication, assisting doctors in various medical procedures, preparing articles and the patient for medical or nursing procedures, recording vital signs, tube feeding, giving enema, bowel wash dressing, stomach wash, eye and ear care, collection and sending of specimens, pre-and post-operative care. Assists in administration of transfusion, perineal care, breast care etc.
- Maintains intake and output chart.
- Observes change in-patient’s condition and records, takes necessary action and reports to the concerned authority.
- Imparts health education to the patient and his/her family.
- Accompanies very ill patients sent to other departments or transferred to other institutions.
- On patient’s discharge, see that the discharge procedure is carried out in time.
Ward Management
- Report to the floor I/C on duty.
- Hands over and takes over the patient and ward equipment and supply.
- Keeps the Ward neat and tidy.
- Maintains safety of the ward equipment.
- Prepares and checks ward supplies.
- Assists Nurse Incharge in ward management and officiates in her/his absence. Assists in taking inventories.
- Supervises students and other junior Nursing personnel working with her/him.
- Maintains ward record and reports assigned to her/ him by the sister in charge.
- Check oxygen and suction.
- Get the oxygen humidifier and suction bottle cleaned as per hospital policy.
- Indent only the required quantity of medicine and disposables, see that the returns are made early, do not wait till
- the patient is charged.
- To co-ordinate and work for the smooth functioning of the hospital
Other Educational Function
- Participates in clinical teaching both planned and incidental.
- To attend classes regularly.
- Teaches and guides domestic staff.
- Helps in the orientation of new staff.
- Participates in the staff education programme.
- Guides student Nurses.
